Gerd Schmitt (born 13 December 1949 in Worms) is a German lawyer and was director of the Federal Council from 1 October 2010 until his retirement on 1 April 2015. With effect from 1 February 2013, he was appointed Secretary of State. Edit LifeQualtext
After studying law in Heidelberg, Schmitt worked at the Landratsamt Biberach an der Riß, from 1978 to 1980. In 1980, he moved to the Ministry of the Interior of Baden-Württemberg, where he was the head of the press office and the press secretary of the Minister of the Interior, Heinz Eyrich. Subsequently, he went to the federal government of Baden-Württemberg in June 1984. There he was initially Head of the Central Office and the Ministerial Office, then head of the Department of Federal Affairs, Federal Council and Press as of January 1992.
With effect from 1 June 2002 Gerd Schmitt was appointed deputy director of the Federal Council. Since October 1, 2010, he headed this top federal authority as the successor of the Federal Councilor for the Federal Republic, Dirk Brouër
