Tara (What the wind took)

Tara is the plantation in which part of the action of Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel What the Wind is Taken and the film of the same name is developed. It is located near Jonesborough (now Jonesboro) in Georgia. In it took place the final defeat of the Confederate troops during the American Civil War (Jonesborough Battle), so it has a special meaning for American history.

Mitchell modeled Tara on the model of prewar local plantations, notably the Clayton County plantation where her maternal grandmother, Annie Fitzgerald Stephens, was born and raised by an Irish immigrant and her American wife. The name Tara is used in the name of a theater in Atlanta and at Clayton Airport, among others.

The twelve oaks, the neighboring plantation in the novel, is nowadays the name of many businesses, a secondary school and a school stadium in nearby Lovejoy.
