With his brother Pau Espasa i Anguera he founded Espasa Hermanos who in 1877 until 1881 changed his name to be José Espasa Anguera at the head of the publishing house. In 1881 he became associated with Manuel Salvat i Xivixell, his brother-in-law, giving rise to the Espasa and Company (1881-1897), and in 1897, Mr. Salvat separated himself from the name of the company and until 1908, he took the name of José Espasa e Hijos, which included the sons and collaborators of the founder: José Espasa Plaster, Juan Espasa Plaster, and Luis Espasa Plaster. Beginning in 1905 began the work of editing the European-American Illustrated Universal Encyclopedia, known as Encyclopedia Espasa. In 1925, the publishing house Hijos de José Espasa became associated with Calpe and took the name of Espasa-Calpe, S.A.
