Franz-Josef Mertens


Franz-Josef Mertens (born March 3, 1934 in Bottrop, Germany, July 17, 2017) was a German politician (SPD).

Mertens was initially active as a lawyer, in 1959 the first and 1965 the second juridical state sabotage. He promoted the admissibility of compulsory labor and compulsory labor in accordance with the Basic Law and the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in 1964, and became deputy chairman of the association in 1966, then a deputy member of the board of the Sparkasse Bottrop a year later. He held this office and the head of the department until 1980.

In 1966, Mertens joined the SPD, one year later the ÖTV. He was a member of the Bottrop subcommittee of the SPD. From 1974 to 2004 Mertens sat in the town council of Bottrop. From 1980 to 1994 he also sat in the German Bundestag. As a direct elected member of the constituency of Bottrop - Recklinghausen IV, he represented the cities of Bottrop and Gladbeck.
