Church of Trondenes

Church of Trondenes

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Trondenes in Trondenes near Harstad is the northernmost medieval stone church in Norway. Although the time of the construction is often stated around 1250, dendrochronological investigations have shown that this is the third church construction at this location and the completion was completed shortly after 1434.

In the Middle Ages, the church was the central church for all of Northern Norway and contains a wealth of facilities. One of the wing altars comes from a Lübeck workshop, either that of the late-Gothic sculptor Bernt Notke, who was one of the greatest art exporters in Northern Europe at the time, or the imperialissima master who was close to him. The Hanseatic City of Lübeck was responsible for the establishment of the Hanseatic League on the German bridge in Bergen, and at that time controlled the trade with Norway. From Bergen, stockfish and clipfish were produced in Northern Norway and distributed throughout Europe as a fastenspeise.
