Banquet of Conxo
The Conxo Banquet took place on March 2, 1856, and it was an act of fraternization between workers, artisans and students, in which students, of a high social class, serve workers and artisans as waiters as symbol of respect and equality. The banquet was a gesture of socialist nature, which provoked the anger of the most powerful sectors of Santiago de Compostela.
It operated as an attack on the preconceived traditional social scheme, so that students, most wealthy classes, and artisans shared bread and table. The banquet was attended by personalities of the stature of Aurelio Aguirre, who gave a speech and Eduardo Pondal, who recited some verses in Castilian of his authorship. It is speculated that RosalĂa de Castro may have been present.
It is known that the Conxo Banquet became an event of great symbolic and real importance within the history of Galicia, becoming a significant part of the Galician collective memory.
