Awakening of the Nation

Þjóðvaki (sometimes transcribed as Thjódvaki, in Icelandic Awakening of the Nation) was an Icelandic political left party founded in 1993. Among its founders was Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir after losing an internal election by the leadership of the Social Democratic Party. In the parliamentary elections of 1995 it obtained the 7,2% of the votes and four seats. In the 1999 elections he formed a coalition with the Social Democratic Party, the ex-communist People's Alliance and the feminist Women's List. In 2000 it formally merged with these parties to form the Social Democratic Alliance.
