Sybaris (monsters)
Sybaris is a female monster in Greek mythology.
The Sybaris, also called Lamia, lived in a large cave of Kirphi, which belongs to the southern foothills of Parnass, near a settlement of Krisa, situated in the south-west of Phokis, and a port of Delphi , The beast swallowed man and beast, and devastated the whole environment. When the Delphians asked their oracles for advice, they answered that they would have to sacrifice one of their youths to the monster to be freed from their ravages. By the lot, Alcyoneus, the only son of Diomos and Meganeira, was chosen. With a wreath he was led by the priests to the cave of Sybaris. On the way, however, Alkyoneus met the hero of Eurybato, son of Euphemus, a descendant of the river god Axios. Stunned by the beauty of the sacrifice, Eurybatos decided to save the boy. He took the wreath-designing wreath, and took the place of Alkyoneus to the cave. He then successfully combated the beast and plunged it down the rock. In the place where it arose, a spring originated, called Sybaris. The city of Sybaris, located in Lucania (southern Italy), is said to have been named after the monster.
