Das "Nairobi-Village" des San Diego Zoo Safari Park
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly San Diego Wild Animal Park) is adjacent to the San Diego Zoo, one of San Diego's greatest attractions. It houses a variety of endangered animal species from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Australia. The park is located in an extremely natural environment, which gives the zoo the opportunity to show the animals in very natural and spacious facilities. The park is also famous for its breeding program at the California Condor, the program is one of the most successful in the country.
The park has an area of seven square kilometers. In 2013, the animal population consisted of 2,600 animals from more than 300 species. As an alternative to the foot march, the zoo offers an electric railroad.
Depending on the season, the park employs about 400 to 600 employees. The park is also the quarantine center of Southern California for zoo animals imported to the USA via San Diego.
Both the city's zoos, the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are hosted by the Zoological Society of San Diego. The Safari Park is 51 kilometers far from the zoo, at 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road east of Escondido, California. In 2010, the parkname of San Diego Wild Animal Park was changed to San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
