Martha and Mary is the usual way of referring to two female disciples of Jesus Christ:

Both were sisters of Lazarus of Bethany, and they appear in the Gospels. According to the Gospel of St. John his house was in Bethany, which Jesus Christ visited on several occasions; while in the Gospel of Luke, it is only mentioned that Jesus "entered into a village." The story is found in Luke 10: 38-42.

Martha (the eldest) discontented to Maria (the little girl) for being too attentive to the words of Jesus and neglecting the housework; and later, his mourning for the death of Lazarus, whom Jesus resurrects.

They also appear after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, of which Mary was one of the first witnesses, as Mary Magdalene - with whom she is sometimes identified - Mary Salome and the Virgin Mary ( the three Marys) / p>

The representation of Marta and Maria is a common theme in painting: Main article: Christ in the house of Martha and Mary
