Nathaniel Monroe Marshall, son of Ann L. Hackstaff and Nathaniel Marshall, was born in Clinton County in 1854. His years of youth were overshadowed by the Civil War. In 1874 he became a telegraphist and station agent of the Chateaugay Railroad in Plattsburgh (New York). He later moved to Bellmont, New York, where he worked as an accountant for the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Company. On 15 May 1877 he married Lucy Ann Bellows († 1920). The couple had two daughters and a son.
In 1885 he became a supervisor in the Town Bellmont. In the same year, he was elected to the County Clerk in Franklin County, a post he held for two hours. Afterwards, he worked as a claims adjuster for the Fidelity and Casualty Company until 1895, when he became vice president of the Farmers National Bank of Malone. In 1896 he moved to the Peoples National Bank (later Peoples Trust Company) in Malone. There he was vice president until 1898, then president until 1930 and most recently chairman of the board until his death.
Marshall was from 1915 to 1920 for the 34th district in the Senate of New York (138th to 143nd New York State Legislature). He was elected Treasurer of State of New York in 1920. He suffered a defeat against Democrat George K. Shuler in 1922. Marshall participated in the Republican National Convention as a delegate in 1928. Edit source text State Treasurers von New York
