The Casa de Fructuoso Rivera is a historical museum located in the main square (Independencia) of the city of Durazno, Uruguay. History Historical Museum Casa de Rivera
Its name is due to the fact that in 1835, the first constitutional president of Uruguay, General Fructuoso Rivera, ordered it to be built for later residence.
In it, General Rivera assumed his second presidency in 1839, later transformed it into the seat of the National Executive until 1842.
In 1843 Rivera finally abandoned it, and during the Great War it was used as a military command and jail.
At present it is part of the historical heritage of the city of Durazno. The Municipality of Durazno, inaugurated the museum there on October 11, 1992 and since that time has been a major diffuser of the historic-cultural heritage of Durazn.
The Museum has the Duraznense Archive, with three sections: Archive of Voice and Music (with about 2000 recordings), Image Archive (more than 13,000 photographs) and Documentary Archive. It also has a Library with different sections, highlighting the Collection specialized in national history.
At the end of the 19th century, it operated at the beginning as a private house and later as the headquarters of the Caja Pepe de Durazno and public office. Interior of the museum Interior of the Casa de Rivera Museum.
The museum has several permanent exhibits, about the indigenous past of Uruguay, with materials rescued from different parts of the country. It presents a room designed to tell the life and work of General Fructuoso Rivera. Much of the documents used by Rivera are displayed at the time of his term.
At present Oscar PadrĂ³n Favre is the Director of Museums of the Durazno Intendance.
