As a child, Goessens initially studied the organ and the Waldhorn before moving to the piano at the age of seventeen, when he discovered jazz for himself. After studying with Rob Madna, Erik Vermeulen, Rob van Kreeveld, Hein van de Geyn, Joe Lovano and Richie Beirach, he moved to the Netherlands in 1988, where he studied at the Rotterdam Music Conservatory, piano with Rob van Kreeveld and composition with Bob Brookmeyer. After the graduation in 1994 he received a scholarship the following year, which gave him a New York stay in 1996/97 during which he had lessons with Kenny Werner, Gary Peacock, Jim McNeely and Richie Beirach. He also appeared with Lee Konitz, Adam Nussbaum, Jim Hall, Mike Mainieri, Mads Vinding and Joe Lovano.
In 1993 he began his collaboration with Bob Brookmeyer in the form of a series of duo concerts in Paris, where live recordings were made for French radio. He also collaborated with the trombonist in his New Quartet with drummer Dré Pallemaerts and the bassist Riccardo Del Fra; the album Paris Suite received the Prix du meilleur disque de l'annee of the Académie du Jazz. Goessens also appeared in Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra, with recordings with the likes of Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry, Michael Brecker, and Joe Lovano; he also worked with Brookmeyer in the Metropole Orkest. His compositions were recorded in the arrangement of Brookmeyer with Kris Goessens on the piano for the radio. Kris Goessens also played with Kurt Van Herck (Another Day, Another Dollar), the ClazzEnsemble by Gerard Kleijn and Dick de Graaf, and in 2009, in his own trio (with Hein van de Geyn and Matthieu Chazerenc) and the quintet A 'l improviste (with Jasper Blom, Joris Roelofs, Clemens van der Veen and Joost Lijbaart). In the field of jazz, he was involved in nine recording sessions between 1994 and 2011, except the ones with Pieter de Mast and Sal La Rocca. Kris Goessens taught piano, music theory, composition / improvisation at the Conservatory of Rotterdam, as well as at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Among his pupils, a. Pär Lammers.
