Liminality

The concept of liminality is a notion developed by Arnold Van Gennep, later taken by Victor Turner, and alludes to the state of openness and ambiguity that characterizes the intermediate phase of a tripartite time-space (a preliminal or previous phase , an intermediate or liminal phase and another posliminal or posterior phase). Liminality is directly related to the communitas since it is an anti-structure and anti-hierarchy manifestation of society, that is, a situation in which a generic "spiritual" communion among social subjects would surpass the specificities of a stratification . It is, therefore, the moment where trivial distinctions are suspended, which precisely allows the "passage" between one social condition and another.
