Church theft

Church robbery or sacrilegium is the theft of objects from a church, or the theft of consecrated objects, which are used for worship (Res sacrae). According to German law (§ 243 No. 4 StGB) and Austrian law (§ 128 (1) No. 2 of the Criminal Code), this form of theft is punished as a "particularly serious case" with up to ten years' imprisonment. The potential violation of religious feelings by the desecration of sacred objects is regarded as serious. In the Middle Ages the death penalty was imposed.
