Ulrich Wilhelm Schaefer (born November 30, 1938 in Breslau, Germany, died August 18, 2002 in Essen, Germany) was a German internist and cancer researcher in the field of stem cell transplantation.
In December 1975, Ulrich W. Schaefer first performed a bone marrow transplant in a leukemia patient. In 1977 Schaefer was awarded the habilitation. Four years later, he was appointed professor of internal medicine. At the University Hospital in Essen, Ulrich W. Schaefer was entrusted with the management of the new Department of Bone Market Transplants in 1988.
