Piraiki Patraiki

The orphanage factory in Patras, 2011

Piraiki-Patraiki S.A. (Πειραϊκή-Πατραϊκή) was a manufacturer of Patras textiles. Competition from mostly the Far East made the company so that the second-largest private employer of Greece and the tenth largest textile producer in Europe had to file for bankruptcy in 1996. Edit HistoryQual

The company was founded as Patraiki in Patras in 1919, followed by the takeover of Piraiki from Piraeus in 1931. Already in the 1950s the company was in difficulties, which were overcome by a modernization wave of the plants. This included the purchase of an IBM 1401 calculator and the opening of a factory in Sudan.

The company had its own design department, but external designers such as T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings also dealt with regional markets better.

In 1983, the state's 64% majority was taken over by the state, and the company continued to operate privately. In 1988 the Textildesigner Yannis Tseklenis became the head of the company. Ultimately, the company was no longer profitable due to the competition from the Far East and the opening up of the market. In 1996, the state entered into all the grants and the company went bankrupt. The company was also active in the Wilhelm-Lorch-Foundation.
