Matonabbee
Matonabbee (circa 1737 - 1782) was a hunter and leader of the Chipewyan ethnic group. After the death of his father, Matonabbee lived for a time in Fort Prince of Wales, where he learned to speak English.
He worked as a guide for Samuel Hearne during his exploration from 1770 to 1772, and was an intermediary between the Cree tribes and the Hudson Bay Company. On the occasion of the death of many Chipewyan during an epidemic of smallpox in 1782, of the defeat of Fort Prince of Wales by the French, and of the destruction of Churchill Factory 1782, which had been main source of his fame and fortune, Matonabbee entered a depression and committed suicide, being the first case of suicide collected between the Indian population of the north.
