Joost Hals was the second son of the clothmaker Franchois Hals and his wife Adriana van Gestenryck after Frans Hals, who was born in 1583 or 1584. He was born 1584 or 1585, an exact date of birth is unknown as with his brother. The Hals family emigrated to the northern Netherlands, after Antwerp had fallen to the Duke of Parma in August 1585. The mention of the baptism of Dirck Hals in the Reformed Church at Haarlem on March 19, 1591 is the first testimony of her resettlement to this city where the family remained.

Joost Hals was like his two brothers genre and portrait painter, but his works are not known. He died before 16 October 1626, as it is shown for this day that Frans and Dirck Hals, as his heirs, abolished a seizure of the estate of Karel van Mander the Younger. Joost Hals had this 1623 for an unknown reason. Edit source text
