Brotherhood of Beauty
The Brotherhood of Beauty was a Mallorcan group, also known as The Pilgrims of Beauty, created in 1908 by Juan Sureda Bimet and painter John Singer Sargent, as an instrument aimed at cultural regeneration on the island. His country outings were usually collected in the Palmares newspapers La Almudaina and the Last Hour (Spain). History
Most of the natural exits made by the Brotherhood of Beauty took place in the Sierra de Tramuntana, crossing ancient roads and looking for watchtowers and places from which to contemplate the sea, the sky, the peaks or the wind, while read poetry and took notes of the natural. Occasionally, the participants ended up cheering or crying at a sunset or a special sight; other times the excursions were about to end in tragedy, due to the recklessness and impulsive behavior of some participants. The Confraternity of the Beauty would also be positioned against certain alterations of the landscape, like the project of canalization and burial of the torrent of Sóller presented in 1914 by the City council of that locality.
The painters Pilar Montaner Maturana, Santiago Rusiñol, Joaquin Mir and Antonio Gelabert, as well as the founders, were Jofrín Sorolla, Rubén Darío and Miguel de Unamuno.
In general, the Beauty Pilgrims were considered crazy and extravagant by Mallorcan society, and some illustrious personages of the time, such as the priest and intellectual Miquel Costa i Llobera, the writer and politician Joan Alcover or the Archduke Luis Salvador graciously refused the invitation to join the group. When Juan Sureda Bimet was ruined in the 1920s, the Brotherhood eventually disappeared.
