Anianus (Wilparting)

The Holy Anianus (* 6th century or 7th century; † 15th November 697 in Irschenberg) was a Christian deacon and missionary in the 7th century.

Legend has it that Anianus and his uncle Marinus were of noble iro-Scottish origin. In Rome, Marinus was consecrated by Pope Eugene I as bishop and Anianus as deacon. Together, they later Christianized the Tegernseer Valley in the present district of Miesbach (Oberbayern) where they lived for more than 40 years as a hermit. According to legend, Marinus was murdered by Vandals. Anianus, having learned of Marinus' martyrdom, died a miraculous death on the same day.

The pilgrimage church Wilparting near Irschenberg is dedicated both to St. Marinus and St. Anianus.

From the name Anianus the male first names Anian and Anjan are derived. The female first name Anja, however, does not come from St. Anianus, but is a Russian form of the name Anna.
