Percy Cerutty
Percy Wells Cerutty (born January 10, 1895 in Melbourne, † August 15, 1975) was an Australian track and field coach, who was mainly responsible for medium- and long-distance runners.
As an opponent of interval training, he propagated long running units at a moderate pace. He coined the phrase "They do not run with their legs, but on their legs", and stressed the importance of the arms, which should form a harmonious movement unit with their legs , in order to ensure optimum force deployment. His methods seemed quite unorthodox: he had his protege walk barefoot in the dunes, mountaineering and even chopping wood, but was ahead of his time. Through the focus in individual training sessions he practiced block training, with the mountain risers on the highest dunes his runners learned where and how they could hit the main body of the body in complete hyperacidity (= optimal running economy). Athletes who trained according to his running philosophy, he called stotans, a mix and Stoic and Spartan. The success proved him right: he brought out among other things the world record chords John Landy and Herb Elliott.
