Ilyushin Il-40

The Ilyushin Il-40 (code-named NATO Brawny) was a ground-attack aircraft project. Design and development

The plane was developed in the mid-1940s as a substitute for Il-2 and Il-10. It was developed as a close support aircraft and was equipped with MiG-19 engines. It had an anachronistic design, as the air intakes in front of the nose were not common and was armed with 4 Nudelman N-37 guns at the bow and 2 Nudelman-Rikhter NR-23 23 mm at the stern. Finally, the prototype took off in March 1953. The tests were successful except in the guns, as the gases from the engine stopped the engine. In the end, only 7 prototypes were built because the design was outdated, and Stalin also discarded its production in series because it considered a Sturmovik reactor as an innesecary and decided to direct funding to other types of bombers.
