Part of the Drävle stone (Rune U1167) showing Andvari.
In Norse mythology, Andvari (ancient Nordic: careful or cautious) was a dwarf who lived under a waterfall and had the power to become a fish at will. He had a magic ring called Andvarinaut, which helped him to be rich. In Richard Wagner's version of The Ring of the Nibelung is known as Alberich.
Loki captured him (with a net that Ran had provided) and forced him to give him his gold and Andvarinaut. Andvari cursed Andvarinaut with the threat that he would destroy who possessed it, leading (inevitably) to many misfortunes.
After the deaths of Brunilde and Sigurd, Gunther leaves the gold in a cave. Years later, Andvari discovers the cave and its lost gold. However, his ring is lost forever.
