Privilegio de Kosice

Privilegio de Kosice. The Privilege of Koszyce (in Hungarian, Kassai paktum) was an agreement in which King Ludwig I of Hungary made a series of concessions to the szlachta (nobles) of Poland in 1374. Privileges were granted in the Hungarian population of Kassa. The mother of the Hungarian King Louis I was Elizabeth Łokietek, daughter of King Vladislao I of Poland. After the disappearance of the Polish royal house, the Hungarian king inherited the throne of Poland, however, years later Luis himself had to face a similar situation: he had no son sons who succeeded him in Hungary and Poland. Before this he decided to secure the thrones to his daughters in both kingdoms, signing among many, this pact with the Polish nobility granting them certain privileges. In return for these concessions the Polish nobles would recognize one of the daughters of the monarch, Catherine, Mary or Eduvigis as queen of Poland at his death.

The szlachta would get this series of privileges:

As a result, finally Eduvigis succeeded his father as the monarch of Poland after a civil war. The influence of Hungary in Poland was reduced, since one of the conditions for the ascent of Eduvigis to the Polish throne was the end of the union between both kingdoms. The issuance of these privileges increased the power of the Polish nobility, which would greatly influence the policy of the kingdom for centuries.
