Xuthos (ancient Greek Ξοῦθος) is the son of the Hellenes and the nymph Orseis in Greek mythology - or, less commonly, the Aiolus and the Enarete.
His brothers Aiolos and Doros - the patriarchs of the Aiolians and Dorians - expelled him from Iolkos, who ruled him for some time, accusing him of stolen their paternal inheritance. The Athenian king Erechtheus granted him asylum, and Xuthos married his daughter Krusa. Together they became parents of Diomede and Achaios and Ion. The latter became the patriarchs of the Achaians and the Ionians. Xuthos founded the tetrapolis consisting of the four places Marathon (Μαραθών), Probalinthos (Προβάλινθος), Trikorythos (Τρικόρυθος) and Oinoe (Οἰνόη).
After the death of Erechtheus, Xuthos proposed his eldest son Kekrops II as his successor. As this decision fell to his brothers, he had to leave Athens. He went to the north of the Peloponnese, where he died in Aigialos, which was later renamed to his son in Achaia. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Edit sourcetext
