Test of O'Sullivan
The O'Sullivan test is an analytical test performed during pregnancy, it is a screening test for gestational diabetes mellitus. The test evaluates carbohydrate metabolism through blood glucose testing.
ProcessThe test, which is recommended in many cases a fasting period of 8 to 10 hours (although can be performed at any time of the day without being fasting), consists of a first blood glucose test, after which the patient drinks a solution of 50 grams of glucose in water. After an hour, another blood glucose test is performed and the result is compared to the first one. Interpretation of results Indications
In Spain and other countries with a high prevalence of diabetes, the O'Sullivan test is usually performed on all pregnant women between the 24th and 28th weeks of gestation.
In other countries it is done only in groups at risk:
There is some controversy about the use of the test, since universal achievement for all pregnant women tends to overdiagnose diabetes, whereas selective use can leave undiagnosed cases.
