Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a chronic, progressive and rare disease affecting children and young adults. It is caused by the measles virus. It is characterized by a history of primary measles followed by a few years without symptoms, after which a slow and progressive psychoneurological deterioration that consists of personality changes, sudden attacks, myoclonus, ataxia, photosensitivity, ocular abnormalities, spasticity, and coma begins.

This is caused by a mutation in the M protein, involved in the budding process, thus accumulating nucleocapsides in the neural tissue. The recommended treatment is the administration of interferon and antivirals.
