Coat of arms of Ricardo de Avranches

Richard of Avranches, second Earl of Chester (1094 - 25 November 1120) was the son of Hugo, first Earl of Chester and Ermentruda of Clermont. First years

He was seven when his father, known as Hugo the Fatty, was killed. Probably inherited his titles and goods in 1107. He married Lucia-Mahaut, daughter of Stephen II of Blois. Military career

At the age of 20, in 1114, Ricardo was in a military campaign when he was appointed Earl of Chester. Together with King Alexander I of Scotland, he led an Anglo-Norman army towards Gwynedd, as part of a three-pronged campaign organized by King Henry I of England against the kingdom of Gwynedd, and its leader Gruffydd ap Cynan. Gruffydd, instead of risking himself in battle, satisfied the King with an oath of honor and proper fine. The campaign soon ended and Ricardo returned to Chester. White boat The succession line of Avranches as Chester's Earls failed when Richard, along with his illegitimate brother Ottuel, joined with William Adelin, heir to the throne of England, since he was the son of King Henry I and boarded the Boat White. This boat sank in front of the town of Barfleur, perishing all except one passenger, in 1120. Ricardo died at the age of 26, along with his wife Lucia-Mahaut, leaving no offspring. The title of Earl of Chester passed to a cousin of Richard, called Ranulfo I in 1121.
