Matías Duque

Matías Duque de Estrada, (1622 - 1669), Spanish Baroque writer of the seventeenth century, relative of the writer Diego Duque de Estrada. Life and work

He was a priest of the Parish of San Miguel in the town of Saldaña (Palencia). He wrote in 1699 Flowers of Dichos and Acts taken from several and diverse Authors, whose manuscript is conserved in the National Library of Naples. It is a miscellany of prose and verses drawn from numerous sources, especially classical writers. Among them are some poems by Matías Duque himself. It is also important because of the abundance of historical details. The work was published in Valencia (Imp. Antonio López and Co. 1917) and has been used by many Hispanists as a source, in particular Eugenio Mele, E. Teza, A. Miola and Karl Vollmöller. Lately Francisco Javier Serna has discovered another work composed by him, Noches buenas de Saldaña, which also belongs to that genre. Bibliography
