Juan Miguel de la Guardia

Juan Miguel de la Guardia and Ceinos (Ontaneda - Santander on July 12, 1849 - Oviedo in 1911) was a Spanish architect and urban planner. He held the position of Municipal Architect in the city of Oviedo from 1882 to 1911 , where he made several buildings of eclectic French style typical of late 19th century. Together with the architects Javier Aguirre and Nicolás García Rivero part of the generation of 1881. It is known for having made the Casa del Dean Payarinos (home of Deán Benigno Rodríguez, popularly known as Payarinos) in Oviedo. He studied architecture at the Higher School of Madrid in the period 1872-1876, obtaining the title in 1881. It finishes the race the same year that Jose López Sallaberry. For some years he travels through Europe receiving various influences from the turn of the century. In the year 1882 he arrives in Asturias and he obtains the place of architect of Oviedo, occupying this position until its death. The relationship he has with the Indians from America allows him to receive several commissions for housing in Oviedo, such as Villa Magdalena, a city where he resides until his death in 1911. In Oviedo he also made the La Luna school. In Langreo he built the Dorado Schools in Sama and the market of supplies of the Felguera, both in the twenties. In 1988 the city council honors the centenary of its birth, naming one of its avenues: Paseo Juan Miguel de la Guardia Asturias.
