At the Werkkunstschule in Offenbach, Gotthilf briefly began his training in 1943. In 1948 he passed the final examination in writing and graphics and in 1949 the master's examination in the bookbinding trade. At the Staatliche Akademie der Bildende Künste in Stuttgart, he then worked on book studies. For the further artistic development the stay at the Collège Technique Municipal Estienne in Paris from 1955 to 1956 was of particular importance. In 1965 he was appointed head of the masterclass for bookbinders to the Academy for the Graphic Arts in Munich. For 28 years he led this class.

From 1967 to 1982, Gotthilf was the short-listed president of the international association "Meister der Einbandkunst". The Württembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart has briefly left its collection of 521 handbands with all conceivable types of cover from leather to plexiglas.

In 1994, the state of Baden-Württemberg honored him for his work as a teacher and artist with the award of the Order of Merit of the Land of Baden-Württemberg. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Standard data (person): GND: 119138697 (PICA, AKS) | VIAF: 10649187 | Wikipedia People Search
