Anaxandridas was married to his brother's daughter. As the marriage was childless, the Ephorians urged him to divorce and marry another woman. Anaxandridas, however, refused to leave his wife. For this reason, the ephors consulted with the Geronts. They proposed to the king to marry a second wife, contrary to Spartan custom. Anaxandridas consented and married the daughter of Prinetades, the son of Demarmenus. His second wife bore him the son of Cleomenes. But a short time later his first wife gave birth to a son, Dorieus. With her, he had two more sons named Leonidas and Kleombrotos. The successor of Anaxandridas became the first-born Kleomenes, although he was not thought to be particularly talented. War with TegeaQuelltext edit
Anaxandridas, together with Ariston, the Spartan king from the house of the Eurypontids, continued the war against Tegea, which his father and grandfather had passed in vain. They interviewed the Delphi Oracle and received the reply that they would win the war if they brought the mortal remains from Orestes to Sparta. But no one knew where his grave was, why they asked the oracle a second time. No one at first understood the saying they received. Only Lichas, an Agathoergus, found the tomb under a smithy and brought the corpse to Sparta. In the third generation the Spartans were able to defeat the Tegeaten. Edit sourcetext
