The hero of the narrative is the aging writer Ford Newcomb, who has been suffering from a writ blockade since the death of his wife, Pat, who has been encapsulated by his environment. His interest is only aroused by the young girl Jackie Maxwell when she tells him the story of a woman who was stoned by her neighbors because she loved the devil. Ford immediately suspects a real event behind it and decides together with Jackie to find out what happened.

In her research, Jackie becomes more and more obsessed with the devil and falls into a psychic crisis. On the other hand, she meets the true devil, who tries to win her love and arouse Ford's jealousy. In the end it turns out that Jackie was not the devil's target, but Ford. He offers a pact, against Ford's soul, he would resurrect his deceased wife. Ford, however, opts for Jackie.

Despite all stereotypes, a certain literary claim can not be denied to the novel. In history, both protagonists alternate as ego narrator. Large parts of the plot are thus duplicated so that not only the characters of the two are illuminated, but the novel also gains in complexity.
