Van Heusen and Cahn wrote To Love and Be Loved for the movie Damn they are all (Origin Title: Some Came Running, 1958) directed by Vincente Minnelli. The main roles include Shirley McLaine, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, who also presents the song. Van Heusen and Cahn received an Oscar nomination for the song in 1959 in the category Best Song.

In the lyrics, "love and be loved" is conjured up as the meaning of life, which "makes a sad heart sing and gives wings to the birds."

Frank Sinatra released the song in 1958 as a single (Capitol F4103, coupled with the song No One Ever Tells You by Carroll Coates and Hub Attwood) and on his Capitol album All the Way.
