From 1968, Dinkel studied philosophy and economics at the University of Munich. In 1970 he was admitted to the German Cultural Foundation. After graduation as a Diplom-Volkswirt 1972 he remained as a scientific assistant in Munich. During this time, his doctoral thesis was issued, which he presented in 1976. After his habilitation in 1981, he held his PhD from 1981 to 1983 at Harvard University. In 1985, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft took him as a Heisenberg scholarship holder.
In 1986 he was appointed to the Chair for Quantitative Methods of Demography at the University of Bamberg. In 1998, he moved to the University of Rostock and rebuilt the nationwide unique diploma course in demography.
