Province of Brabant

The former province of Brabant is now divided into Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant and the Brussels Capital region.

Brabant was a province in the geographical center of the Kingdom of Belgium, with administrative seat in Brussels. The area was 3358 km. It was the only province in the country that covered two areas of language and three regions. The name of the province referred to the historical duchy of Brabant.

The province was first established in 1815 under the name "South Brabant", after the Kingdom of the United Kingdom (1815 to 1830) had been assigned to the House of Orange due to the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna. In 1830, the southern part of the kingdom, which was subsequently called the Kingdom of Belgium, was not recognized by the Netherlands until 1839.

In the course of the federalization of Belgium, the province became part of the Walloon Region in the Flemish Brabant (part of the Flemish Region) and Walloon Brabant (part of the Walloon Region) in 1995, along the border between the Dutch linguistic region in the north and the French linguistic region ) divided. The Brussels-Capital Region took possession of the provincial powers for its own territory and has been regarded as free of a province since then. Single-level Edit source text
