Pantelis Voulgaris


Pantelis Voulgaris (Greek: Παντελής Βούλγαρης) is a Greek film director born on October 2, 1940 in Athens, who has worked in more than forty films.

Film career

Close to Theo Angelopoulos, Voulgaris is one of the best known representatives of the new Greek cinema. He studied Direction at the Cinematography Institute of Athens. He then continued with directing theater and acting on television. During the Greek military dictatorship he had to go into exile for six months in 1973.

His films have premiered at various festivals, including those in Berlin, Venice and Moscow, and have made large collections. At the festival of Thessaloniki in 2002 he was the subject of a retrospective showing not only his films but also short films, films and television works. One of his latest films is the award-winning Nyfes, which was co-directed by American director Martin Scorsese (as producer), Giorgos Arvanitis, best known for his work with Greek director Theo Angelopoulos and novelist Ioanna Karystiani National Prize of Literature of Greece) as scriptwriter.

Pantelis Voulgaris is married to the novelist Ioanna Karystiani and has two children. Filmography Awards
