Houses is a promoted biologist, chairman of CETAF and heads the national GBIF node for insects. He is chairman of the German section of Diversitas.
His dissertation from the year 1990 at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg bore the title Comparative Investigations on the Morphology, Systematic Meaning and Phylogenesis of the Female Genital Organs of the Lepidoptera (Insecta).
