Tmolos (city)
Tmolos (Greek Τμῶλος, Latin form Tmolus) was an ancient city in the West-Cina-Lydian landscape. It was situated in the north of the mountain of the same name (today the Boz Dağı mountain range), probably 14 km west of Sardeis at the present village of Gökkaya, east of Turgutlu in the province of Manisa in Turkey.
In 17 AD, Tmolos was devastated by an earthquake along with other cities in the Roman province of Asia, and received reconstruction aid from the Emperor Tiberius. From the second century onwards the city bore the name Aureliopolis in honor of Emperor Markaurel, as their coins show. The late Roman bishopric of the city is backed by the titular bishopric Aureliopolis in Asia of the Roman Catholic Church. Edit source text Weblinks Edit sourcetext Edit the source text
