Ignace Gordeiev and Jacob Maïakine are two merchants on the Volga and greedy for money, but Gordeiev is much more fatalistic; when his cargo is lost, he jokes while drinking vodka. Widowed, he remarried with a sad and impassive woman who died after giving birth to a boy.
