Knocknashee Hillfort
Knocknashee Hillfort (Irish Cnoc na Sí) is located in the Knocknashee Townland southwest of Sligo and seven kilometers north of Tobercurry in the Ox Mountains in County Sligo, Ireland.
Barry Raftery (1944-2010) investigated 40 single and multiple enclosures on the island (about 80 are known), and divided them into three classes: Although it was of interest due to the two large Cairns of Passage tombs and the remains of about 30 beehive huts and about a dozen round excavations in the rocky rock, it was not until 1988 that aircrafts were recognized that Knocknashee had a 20-hectare 700-meter-long and 320- m wide Hillfort of Class 2, which is enclosed by two earth and a limestone wall. In Ireland about 80 Hillforts are known, probably from the Bronze Age. Their size varies between 12 and 129 hectares (Brusselstown Hillfort in County Wicklow).
