Jonny King


John "Jonny" King (born 1965 in New York City) is an American jazz pianist, author and lawyer.

Jonny King started playing the pianoforte at the age of new years and began to be interested in jazz at an early age under the influence of the music of Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson. As a teenager, he had several appearances in New York clubs. At the beginning of the 1980s he studied with Tony Aless and Mulgrew Miller and had the opportunity to play with Art Blakey. Afterwards, King worked with musicians of the cooperative The Young Lions, went on tour with his friend Joshua Redman and played with the formation Out of the Blue, a. with Christian McBride, Bobby Watson, Kenny Garrett, Vincent Herring, Roy Hargrove and Joe Lovano. Jonny King also collaborated with Vincent Herring, Billy Drummond, Joshua Redman, Steve Wilson, Peter Washington, Larry Grenadier and David Sánchez to record three albums under their own name for Label Criss Cross (1994) and Enja (1995/97) .

In addition to his musician career, King graduated from Princeton and Harvard Law School and has been working as an attorney for copyright rights. He also worked as an author and wrote the book What Jazz Is, which deals with the New York jazz scene around 1997 and especially the Young Lions.
