Mellentin attended the Volksschule and then did an apprenticeship as a fine mechanic. After the apprenticeship he worked as a miner underground. From 1959 he was a professional firefighter with the factory fire of the Continental. Since 1967 he worked as a caretaker at the Grund- und Hauptschule in Lehrte. Mellentin has been a member of the CDU since 1967. He was chairman of the CDU city council Lehrte and a member of the district board of the CDU. Since 1981, he has been the ruler and chairman of the CDU Council of the City of Lehrte, since 1972 he has also been a member of the district council of Hanover.
