Gordius (Greek Γoρδιoς), a Cappadocian by birth, was the instrument of Mithridates VI (120-63 BC), king of Pontus, in his attempts to annex Cappadocia to the Kingdom of Pontus. Gordius was employed by him, in 116 BC. C., to assassinate to Ariarates VI, king of Capadocia. Gordius was later tutor of a son of Mithridates, who, after the assassination of Ariarates VII was King of Cappadocia as Ariarates IX. Gordius was sent as Mithridates' envoy to Rome, and later employed by him to persuade Tigranes II the Great, king of Armenia, to attack Cappadocia, and expel Ariobarzanes I, whom the Romans had made king of that country in 93 a. C. Sila restored to Ariobarzanes the following year, and drove to Gordio outside of Capadocia. Gordio opposed to Lucio Licinio Murena in the battle of Halys, 82 a. C. Bibliography
