Pompilo
In Greek mythology, Pompilo (in Greek Πομπίλος "pilot fish") is the name of a navigator who was transformed into pilot fish by the god Apollo.
Ocírroe (Greek Ὠκυρόη "fast-flowing"), a nymph from the island of Samos, traveled to the nearby town of Miletus to attend a feast in honor of Artemis. There Apollo fell in love with her and Ocírroe, fearing to be kidnapped by the god, asked Pompilo, a sailor friend of his father, to transfer her back to the island of Samos. Pompilo consented, but it did not help. Apollo finally kidnapped Ocírroe and, as a punishment, turned Pompilo into the pilot fish (Naucrates ductor L.), so named because he used to swim in front of boats and sharks.
The myth of Pompilo and Ocírroe is referred to by Ateneo, Deipnosofistas 283e, and by Eliano, Sobre los animales 15.23.
