Following the referendum in April 1993, Eritrea was proclaimed as an independent state. Once a transitional government was established, the governing and administration bodies were formed and subsequently modified according to the following structure:
The political life of the country is dominated by the Popular Front for Democracy and Justice, heir of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Eritrea, although it has abandoned the initial Marxist ideology. The 1997 Constitution provides for free elections to elect the President and members of the National Assembly, but they have not yet become effective. In fact, despite the formal presence of that Assembly, all powers, including the judiciary, are concentrated in the hands of the President.
