Cuna del Castellano
The expression Cuna del Castellano or Cuna de la Lengua (Cuna de la Lengua) is being used for the celebration of the "Milenium de la Lengua", sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Science in 1977 in the Monastery of San Millán, La Rioja , Spain. This expression was used for the first time in the posters that were published during this celebration.
It is an advertising slogan used by San Millán and La Rioja since then to highlight the importance of the Emilian Glosas. The success of this advertising brand has been such that it is often copied by other enclaves of the language path to promote itself.
On the other hand, the locality of Valpuesta in Burgos is the origin of the so-called Cartularios de Valpuesta, a series of documents written in Romance Latin between the X and XII centuries, which in turn are in some cases copies of other documents , some of which date back to the ninth century, and which for some would be the first written testimony of which there is evidence of a dialect Hispanic romance (although there is no consensus among experts about its authenticity). Therefore, Valpuesta, like San Millán de la Cogolla, are credited with the title of Cuna del Castellano. Recently, the philologist Gregory Kaplan (University of Tennessee, United States) has defended that the authentic cradle of the Castilian language is in Valderredible (Cantabria). The rock churches of this Cantabrian enclave constituted an important focus of pilgrimage, being the center of the cult of San Millán. The prestige of the local variety used there towards the centuries VI-IX d.C. made the Spanish of Valderredible spread as the first standard Castilian, which the pilgrims took to their regions of origin, where it would continue to evolve.
