Kreuztracht in Kranenburg
A crucifixion or cross-tragedy, derived from "cross-bearing", is a prozessional movement of a grace image in the form of a cross through the streets of a place. The term mostly occurs in Westphalia and northern Germany. Sometimes cruises also take place as pilgrimages. Crucifixion takes place on different dates, often on Holy Friday but also on St. John's Day. Edit HistoryQual
The Kreuztracht was introduced into the counter-revolution in Northern Germany. In the diocese of Münster, this took place in the early 17th century, and then intensified after the Thirty Years' War under the bishopric, Christoph Bernhard von Galen. In 1616 the first Kreuztracht took place in Münster. The performers were pupils of the local Jesuit college. In the archbishopric of Paderborn the crucifixion was introduced in the form of a procession to seven churches of the city, according to the style of the Roman pilgrims' churches.
