To dissent

Elentir (meaning "star-spotter" in Quenya) is a fictional character belonging to the legendarium created by the British writer J. R. R. Tolkien. He is a dúnadan, son of Númendil and older brother of Amandil. His story appears in several Tolkien texts published by his son Christopher in The Peoples of Middle-earth.

Elentir was the successor of Númendil as Lord of Andúnië for being the first-born, and he was in love with Míriel, only daughter of King Tar-Palantir and heir to the throne of Númenor. At this point the story is divided into two versions: in one, Míriel rejected Elentir, because he loved his cousin Ar-Phârazon and both ended up marrying by mutual agreement. In the other, Míriel and Elentir were almost promised, but she was forced to marry Ar-Phârazon and he usurped the throne, as in the version published in The Silmarillion. Christopher Tolkien says in The Peoples of Middle-earth that it is not known with certainty when his father wrote these stories and the only certainty is that the appearance of Elentir was discarded, because although the last version fits with the history of the Silmarillion , it was Amandil who became Lord of Andúnië and not Elentir, who was the firstborn.
